A $20 Bn per year illegal wildlife trade is driving thousands of species towards extinction.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Killing the Trade provides a workable strategy to scale up existing conservation efforts and bring the trade to an end.
Centred around the principle of ‘If it pays it stays’, the book shows how to turn conservation from a cost to an opportunity.
By mobilising impact capital behind commercial ‘Conserprenuer’ solutions, the book sets how we can address the root causes driving the trade, delivering conservation that protects nature, supports local communities, and provides a commercial return on investment.
Killing the Trade is a practical guide for anyone working to save wildlife.
The book concisely summarises the root causes of exploitation and provides a workable, scalable, and profitable model to protect and restore nature at scale.

Dr Richard Milburn MBE
Dr Milburn has worked in the conservation and countering the illegal wildlife field for over a decade.
He completed his PhD at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, studying conservation in regions of armed conflict and subsequently convening the Environmental Security MA Module.
Dr Milburn believes in the power of business and creativity to drive positive environmental change, integrating lessons learned from studies at London Business School.
He is UK representative for the Pole Pole Foundation, a multi-award-winning Gorilla conservation charity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which was an inaugural Earthshot Prize finalist in 2021.
Dr Milburn publishes peer-reviewed articles in academic journals, but seeks to make his research as accessible as possible through concise, solution-driven work that brings clarity to seemingly complex issues.
He was awarded his MBE by Prince William for his work with the British Army and DEFRA to counter the illegal wildlife trade.
